This is a story of survival in a strange new world. Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Digimon Anime, Digimon Survive presents a brand-new adventure set in a mysterious world with characters designed by Uichi Ukumo, and music by the much-acclaimed Tomoki Miyoshi. Digimon Survive sees a brand-new group of teenagers, led by Takuma Momozuka, get lost on a school camping trip, finding them transported to a strange new world of monsters and danger. As they fight their way back home through an animated world of difficult decisions and deadly battles, players’ choices throughout the game will impact the evolution of their monster allies, and the final ending. Battles in the game are fought in 2D, in a more classic SRPG style.

What it’s like

Digimon Survive is a hybrid experience that prioritizes narrative over mechanical complexity. The core loop alternates between lengthy visual novel segments and turn-based tactical battles on an isometric grid. The story follows teenagers transported to a mysterious realm where their choices determine which Digimon evolve and how the plot resolves. While the premise offers high stakes, the writing often feels generic, and the character dynamics can come across as shallow or bland. However, the game excels in its presentation; the anime-style visuals are crisp, and Tomoki Miyoshi’s soundtrack provides a strong emotional backbone that elevates the mood. The pacing is driven by the narrative weight of the decisions rather than mechanical mastery. For fans of the franchise, the appeal lies in seeing familiar creatures in new forms and exploring the branching paths of the relationship system. It is a story-first title where the tactical combat serves primarily as a vehicle for progression and character interaction rather than a deep strategic challenge.

Keep in mind The tactical combat is widely criticized for being shallow, repetitive, and lacking meaningful depth, making it feel tedious compared to dedicated SRPGs. · The visual novel segments feature generic dialogue and underdeveloped characters, which may alienate players seeking strong writing or complex interpersonal drama.
