Originally released by LucasArts in 1993 as a sequel to Ron Gilbert’s ground breaking Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle is a mind-bending, time travel, cartoon puzzle adventure game in which three unlikely friends work together to prevent an evil mutated purple tentacle from taking over the world! Now, over twenty years later, Day of the Tentacle is back in a remastered edition that features all new hand-drawn, high resolution artwork, with remastered audio, music and sound effects (which the original 90s marketing blurb described as "zany!") Players are able to switch back and forth between classic and remastered modes, and mix and match audio, graphics and user interface to their heart's desire. We’ve also included a concept art browser, and recorded a commentary track with the game’s original creators Tim Schafer, Dave Grossman, Larry Ahern, Peter Chan, Peter McConnell and Clint Bajakian. Day of the Tentacle was Tim Schafer’s first game as co-project lead, and a much beloved cult classic! This special edition has been lovingly restored and remade with the care and attention that can only come from involving the game's original creators. It’s coming to Windows, OSX, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita early next year!

What it’s like

Day of the Tentacle Remastered delivers a masterclass in comedic adventure gaming, anchored by razor-sharp writing and unforgettable characters. The narrative follows three friends trapped in different eras, coordinating actions across time to stop a sinister tentacle’s world domination plot. This structure creates a unique cooperative dynamic despite being single-player, as players must juggle simultaneous puzzles and consequences across timelines. The tone is irreverent, zany, and deeply affectionate toward its absurd premise, balancing slapstick humor with clever sci-fi logic. Visually, the remaster transforms the original’s pixel art into lush, hand-drawn high-definition illustrations that retain the game’s distinct cartoonish charm without losing readability. Audio design remains iconic, with a witty soundtrack and sound effects that punctuate every interaction. The experience is polished to perfection, offering optional commentary tracks and concept art for added depth. It is a tight, self-contained narrative journey where dialogue and environmental storytelling drive the engagement, making it a timeless classic of the genre.

Keep in mind The point-and-click interface can feel imprecise or frustrating for modern players accustomed to more direct controls, particularly during inventory management. Additionally, the puzzle logic relies heavily on trial-and-error and abstract thinking that may not appeal to those who prefer linear, action-oriented gameplay.
