A bustling town deep in the frontier at the foot of an endless sea of trees... It is into this wild and untamed setting that a young man collapses, memories gone and only his name to guide him. Bereft of his past, Adol Cristin wanders the town of Casnan searching for clues to his identity. Joined by an information dealer who claims to have known him, the young adventurer helps rescue doomed miners from a collapse; an act which attracts the attention of the Romun Army general in town. Impressed with their skills, the pair is enlisted to explore the Great Forest and map the vast expanses of Celceta – a task which many have attempted in the past, but from which none have ever returned alive. Alone in this strange and uncharted frontier, Adol must brave the perilous sea of trees as he struggles to regain his memories and decide whom he can trust, and who is simply attempting to take advantage of his memory loss in order to deceive him...
What it’s like
Ys: Memories of Celceta delivers a brisk, linear action-RPG experience defined by its relentless momentum and vibrant world. You play as Adol, an amnesiac swordsman thrust into the mysterious Great Forest of Celceta to map its depths while uncovering fragments of his lost identity. The narrative is driven forward by a cast of eccentric companions, particularly the sharp-tongued information dealer who serves as both guide and foil, creating a dynamic duo that anchors the emotional core. Gameplay revolves around fluid, real-time swordplay where dodging and timing are paramount, supported by a party system that allows for strategic skill swaps during combat. The structure is straightforward: clear objectives, linear progression through distinct zones, and a focus on exploration rather than complex branching paths. Visually, the game boasts a lush, stylized aesthetic that captures the wildness of the frontier, while the audio design stands out as a defining strength, blending heavy metal riffs with ambient fantasy scores to heighten the intensity of battles and the serenity of quiet moments.

Keep in mind The combat system, while fluid, lacks the mechanical depth found in more complex action RPGs, relying heavily on rhythm and timing rather than intricate build variety. Additionally, the linear narrative structure may feel restrictive to players who prefer open-ended storytelling or significant player agency in shaping the plot.
