Pankapu is a 2D platform/action game, narrative and episodic: In a world full of Dreams and Nightmares, a tiny warrior has to fight for the safety of his homeland. However, the real purpose of his his quest, beyond the struggle of good and evil, is the mental health of a traumatized child. Told in the manner of a fable read to a child, the game has two levels of reading: the story of Pankapu, epic and naive, and the second one, about Djaha’rell life, the one to whom the tale is told, dark and tragic.

What it’s like

Pankapu offers a neo-retro platforming experience set within the oneiric dreamscape of a traumatized child. The narrative operates on two distinct levels: an epic fable for the protagonist and a tragic reality for the dreamer, creating a poignant thematic layer that elevates the standard adventure structure. Visually, the game is a standout, utilizing a charming, hand-drawn art style that captures a nostalgic 90s aesthetic while maintaining a unique atmospheric identity. The core gameplay revolves around switching between three combat forms—Warrior, Archer, and Mage—allowing for varied tactical approaches to platforming challenges. While the story and visuals are the primary drivers of engagement, the mechanical depth is relatively light. The experience is defined by its mood and narrative ambition rather than complex systems or innovative design, relying on traditional platforming mechanics executed with polish and charm.

Keep in mind The level design is frequently criticized for being repetitive, which may dull the long-term appeal despite the strong visuals. Additionally, the combat lacks significant mechanical depth or build variety, making it feel somewhat shallow compared to its atmospheric strengths.
