Offworld Trading Company
Apr 28, 2016 10 years ago
Offworld Trading Company is a real-time strategy game in which money, not firepower, is the player's weapon. Players lead their developing companies in cutthroat economic warfare against other companies looking to become the dominant economic power on Mars. Loosely inspired by such classics as M.U.L.E., Offworld Trading Company forces players to make tough choices on what resources to acquire, what goods to build and sell, how to interact with the planet's thriving underworld, and when and what stocks to acquire. Players compete against up to seven other AI- or player-controlled companies. The game is won when one player ultimately acquires all the shares of their competitors, thereby wresting control of the entire planet’s economy.
What it’s like
Offworld Trading Company redefines the real-time strategy genre by replacing military conquest with pure economic warfare. You manage a corporation on Mars, buying and selling resources like water, food, and ore to manipulate market prices and bankrupt rivals. The core loop is intensely fast-paced; every second counts as you decide whether to hoard supplies to drive up costs or flood the market to crash competitor stock values. There are no armies, only algorithms and assets. Success requires mastering supply and demand dynamics, leveraging AI trading bots, and executing hostile takeovers by acquiring majority shares of your opponents' companies. The experience is less about tactical positioning and more about financial aggression, offering a unique, high-stakes simulation where the thrill comes from watching an enemy's empire crumble under the weight of their own debts.

Keep in mind The steep learning curve can be overwhelming for players unfamiliar with economic mechanics or RTS conventions. Additionally, while the core loop is addictive, some may find the lack of traditional narrative or character interaction limiting.
