Synopsis

Based on the most successful Russian-made movie ever, the Night Watch game asks players to take part in a millennia-old struggle of supernatural forces; a conflict of which ordinary humans are either completely oblivious, or in which they are unwittingly being used as pawns. In the Night Watch universe, there are people among us who appear ordinary, but who are different; they call themselves "Others." These Others can channel magical power as devastating attacks and defenses. Those who support the forces of light are known as the Night Watch, while those that fight on the side of darkness are the Day Watch. These two sides have been locked in an epic battle with the common hope of one ultimately claiming a decisive victory and a right to rule the world.

What it’s like

Night Watch offers a linear, narrative-driven experience set in a supernatural urban fantasy where immortal 'Others' wage an eternal war for world dominance. The premise establishes a rigid dichotomy between the Light and Dark factions, with players navigating this conflict through a heavily scripted campaign that prioritizes plot progression over player agency. Mechanically, it functions as a stripped-down turn-based tactical RPG, blending strategic grid movement with adventure-game elements. While the atmosphere effectively captures the moody, horror-tinged tone of its source material, the gameplay loop suffers from significant repetition and shallow depth. The structure is rigidly linear, forcing players through a predetermined path that limits replayability and exploration. It serves best as an interactive adaptation for fans of the lore, rather than a robust standalone strategy title.

Strong in Atmosphere / MoodStory / Narrative

Keep in mind The game is not for players seeking deep strategic complexity or high replay value, as its shallow mechanics and repetitive combat quickly become tedious. It may also disappoint those looking for open-ended exploration, given its rigidly linear structure.
