Mega Man X’s mysterious friend, Zero, also joins the fray as a playable character later in this collection.
What it’s like
This collection delivers the quintessential high-octane platforming experience, bridging the gap between 16-bit precision and early 3D-era ambition. You control X or Zero as they battle through linear, side-scrolling stages filled with robotic enemies and formidable boss encounters. The core loop revolves around mastering movement mechanics like dashing and wall-jumping to navigate treacherous terrain while collecting unique weapons from defeated foes. The narrative frames a conflict between heroic Reploids and rogue Mavericks, establishing a sci-fi tone of duty and rebellion without demanding deep engagement. Visually, the game showcases a vibrant, detailed sprite work that evolves into richer backgrounds in X4, accompanied by an iconic, energetic soundtrack that drives the adrenaline-fueled pace. It is a masterclass in tight controls and rhythmic action, offering immediate satisfaction through responsive mechanics rather than complex narrative layers.

Keep in mind The linear level design offers little freedom for exploration or non-combat problem solving. The difficulty curve is steep and unforgiving, which may frustrate players seeking a casual or relaxed experience.
