Defenders of Ardania
Mar 06, 2013 13 years ago
Defenders of Ardania (DoA) is a next-generation tower defense game set in the rich fantasy world of Majesty, but with a twist. Besides the addictive core mechanics of placing towers to stop advancing enemy units, DoA also allows players to take on the role of the attackers seeking to conquer the enemy base. DoA’s innovative new game concepts include light RTS elements, taking the popular genre to the next level. Players must oversee unit production and upgrades while assembling the most effective army from one of three playable races, each with unique locations, towers, and units. However, without magic, a fantasy game is little more than a toothless lion (or dragon, rather), so a wide range of spells will be available for players to decimate their enemies and protect their forces. Although DoA includes a single-player portion, the focus of the game is undoubtedly multiplayer, where two to four players can take each other on or compete against AI opponents via Internet, LAN, or PSN. The multiplayer component offers three different game modes where players can assume either the defensive or offensive sides – or both!
What it’s like
Defenders of Ardania reimagines the tower defense genre by forcing players to simultaneously manage offense and defense. Rather than passively watching turrets work, you actively command a growing army of units from three distinct races, directing them to assault the enemy base while positioning towers to protect your own stronghold. This dual-role mechanic creates a high-stakes, fast-paced experience where resource management is critical; every unit sent forward is a tower not built. The game emphasizes strategic depth through asymmetric race designs and a robust spell system that allows for tactical interventions in real-time. While it lacks the narrative weight of traditional RPGs, its strength lies in mechanical complexity and replayability across various multiplayer modes. It demands patience and long-term planning, appealing to players who enjoy intricate strategic puzzles over casual, quick-fix gameplay loops.

Keep in mind The game can feel punishingly slow for those seeking immediate gratification or casual play sessions. Additionally, the dual-management of offense and defense may overwhelm players who prefer focused, single-role strategy experiences.
